Learner Centered Methods in Teaching Aptitude

  1. It is modern approach of teaching.
  2. Learning is self directed.
  3. In this model students are receiving and interpreting the knowledge.
  4. It is andgragogical approach.
  5. It is student self evaluation process.
  6. Learner is independent.
  7. It is democratic way of teaching approach and everybody gets equal choice.
  8. The Teacher plays the role of facilitator or guide to students learning.
  9. Student should develop their own knowledge by communication, critical thinking and problem solving.

A) Assignments:

  1. Assignments are given to students for various reasons such as for surveying, application of knowledge, solving  numerical problem and acquiring additional information.
  2. The teacher plays an important role even though the learner has the main role. For collecting relevant information, the teacher has to guide the students.
  3. Assignments can be on any type of topic, but the assignment should be such that the students many not just copy from the book.
  4. The assignments should be open-ended and should promote creativity among the students.

 B) Case Study

  1. A case is usually a description of an actual situation, commonly involving a decision, a challenge, an  opportunity, a problem, or an issue faced by a person or persons in social set up such as an organization.
  2. In learning with case studies, the students must deal with situations described in the case.
  3. It helps in braining real-world problems into a classroom innovative solutions to the problems.

 C) Programmed Instruction Method

  1. Programmed instruction is a method of presenting new subject matters to students in a graded sequence of controlled steps.
  2. Students work through the programmed material by themselves at their own speed and after each step test their comprehension by answering an examination question or filling in a diagram.
  3. They are then immediately shown the correct answer or given additional information. Computers and other types of teaching machines are often used to present the material, although books may also be used.
  4. It is a general term for a highly structured system of learning. In this the learner gets immediate feedback after each step.
  5. This enables active  participation of the learner and can be used in all subjects.
  6. Skinners initial programmed instruction format

D) Personalized System of Instruction(PSI):

  1. Best suitable for content that are to be delivered through written material.
  2. Learner must master a series's of  units, assisted by teachers, proctors and enriching lectures before proceeding to the final test.
  3. It is based on mastering of learning.
  4. It facilitates self-paced learning.

E) Computer Assisted Learning(CAL)

  1. Computer is used as a mediator for learning process.
  2. Use of computer speedup information processing, accurately and is much greater than of video tape or book.
  3. It has more flexible and better control in comparison to other methods.
  4. It can be efficiently used for drilling and practicing simulation and modeling

F) Open Learning Method of teaching

  1. Flexible method of delivering instruction where learner has open access to learning resources.
  2. The face-to-face interaction between teacher and students through tutorials should form a part of open learning.
  3. Not such suitable for the rapidly changing nature of content.

G) Interactive Videos

  1. The interactive video approach to teaching can be employed to achieve all the domain levels of Bloom's Taxonomy.
  2. It allows the learner to randomly access any piece of information and provide immediate feedback regarding the consequences of their action.
  3. It enhances the decision making power of the individual.

H) Heuristic Method OR problem solving method

  1. This method was advocated by Prof.Armstrong.
  2. The word "Heuristic" means to discover.
  3. In this method, the students has to find out the answer to his / her own problem by unaided efforts. Thus, the child becomes a discoverer of knowledge by developing a spirit of inquiry.
  4. The main aim of teaching by this method is not to provide much facts about science, mathematics, grammar, ext but to teach how knowledge of these can be obtained.
  5. No help or guidance is provided by the teacher in this method.
  6. Simply the teacher sets a problem for the students and then stands aside while they discover the answer.
  7. It's self-learning approach.

I) Differentiated Instruction(DI)

  1. The teacher plans to teach in a variety of ways to teach learning.
  2. The qualitative aspects are given more importance than quantitative aspects.
  3. It uses multiple approaches to accommodate multiple intelligence's.
  4. It is student-Centered approach.
  5. It is an organized and planned method of teaching.
